The Bourne Legacy

Director: Tony Gilroy
The Bourne Legacy Poster
The first part of the trailer is the production company logo, this shows that they want people to know who made the film before they watch the trailer. The company was Universal, this is not a small company, they are in fact a huge company and have many other parts to their company such as gaming. Since the company is so large straight away the audience who know of them are expecting a good trailer and then a good film.
Once onto the main bit of the trailer it starts with transitions to add effect and then there is the sound of a man asking questions, with the visual effects of the transitions and the series of questions asked to the man in the picture when each transition has finished makes us feel as though there is a puzzle to the film and the transition represents everything attempting to fit together, in all of the transitions the ending image has a black strip down a part of it, this could have a meaning of perhaps there is always a piece of the puzzle missing. When they have finished there is a piece of text fitting to the trailer and then the visual effects are back to normal and the man is the main subject of the trailer, this could mean that there is a sudden realistion of the truth and the image then goes to being a full screen meaning that the gap has been filled and there is not so much of a mystery and character knows what he must do and then there is alot more fast paced action scenes happening telling us that the sub-genre of the film is action but the mystery of the character finding the truth is what makes the film a thriller and this can be clearly seen from the trailer which means that it is a success on letting us know what the film is about.
The male character is shown alot throughout the trailer and is shown injured at the start, and the voice of the man asking him questions made it seem as though he was trying to help him like he was a doctor and then you see an injection, soon after that he was being asked to do things which meant that clearly it worked, then soon after that there was a burst of action meaning that something went wrong and it gives you insight on how the character came to getting injured in the first place because of all the dangerous things that were happening.
The release date is shown at the end of the trailer with a small bit of information linking to the website of the company, this means that the company are focused on promoting the film and they have given a way of learning more about the film by showing them the website where they will have a whole site only for the film and on that site they will have ways of buying the film and release dates and other additional information.

Pulp Fiction

Director: Quentin Tarantino

In this trailer there is a lot of change in the type of music that plays in the trailer from classical, to more up to date music in 1994 of course when the film was made. The trailer went into being more of a quicker pace to match the fast paced music that was on over the images. The genre of the film is thriller with a sub-genre of crime this means that it is a more realistic thriller which is different to a horror thriller perhaps, because the crime thriller does not have to be gory and it will have more of a real storyline that can be followed, this is what can be found out just from the genre of the film.
In the first part of the trailer there was a narration of the awards that the film has won, this shows us how successful the film was meaning that it must have been a good film. Seeing that the film had won awards then the audience watching the trailer would assume that it is a good film and go and watch the full film, the titles are good for promotion of the film and luring the audience to them, also just after the first bit of the trailer there was a short scene when everything started speeding up and then the name of the director popped up, the reason for this is that the director was clearly a well known director at the time of the film being made and anyone who knew this would believe that because he made it, it would be a good film.
The two male characters near the beginning who are always wearing suits and carrying guns and are seen firing them are shown as perhaps gangsters, this is because all of the things that you associate gangsters with at that time are used on the characters things such as the smart dress sense which the suit is very common in and then there is the guns which is associated with violence and violent people. If the characters are associated with these traits then you can assume that they are villainous characters as you do not see heros with these traits. The woman in the trailer is clearly a main character as she is shown in the short period of time more than most characters, the description of this character is that she is desired and she has a connection with one of the other characters as you see her close with a male character and then later on seeing her kiss with the character, this tells us already which character she has a connection with.
The text in the trailer as it goes on outlines the story of the film by showing random words through out, words such as loyalty and betrayal, these two words are conflicting and are shown in that order so it would seem as though there was once loyalty and then betrayal followed and then the text after this was crime, the meaning of this could be that the people who are accused of betrayal in the film which you don't know also have committed a crime by doing this.
The cast is brought to the attention of the audience at the end of the trailer where there is a narration calling out the names of the cast, where the cast could of been put down in text they were called out instead, the reason for them being emphasized is that clearly the cast were all very popular and were top rated actors and actresses. This appeals to the audience because everyone loves to see a film with their favourite actors in, this would result in more people going to watch the film and a huge profit for the producers of the film.
Finally the studio details were shown at the end of the trailer which is important as every trailer would have these because they are a necessity, this is the proof and credit to the people who produced the film and the companies who distributed the film too.

Cabin in the woods

Director: Drew Goddard

In this trailer you can see immediately that it starts with a group of friends excited to go on a get away with each other, later on you begin to see things go wrong like people dying and there is alot of violence. You could see that each one of the characters has their own identity: The character with the glasses appeared to look like the intelligent character of the group because of the stereotypical look that is used, where as the other short haired character could of been described as an athlete because in one of the shots he is holding an American football. The male character with the longer hair could be described as a fool because of his attitude, where in the same category he could be called a druggy as he also appears to be rolling up something to smoke an the van. Now there are the other two female characters who have conflicting identities where the blonde one could be said to be a whore because of her body language, where as the other female character doesnt want to be in the spotlight and you dont see much of her so she could be described as the more innocent character.

The sound in the trailer tells us how the mood changes later on there is three different kinds of sounds this is because at the beginning it has a more cheery mood like it would be when a group of friends go off to go have a break with each other this is clearly the point where everything is ok, the way the music changes to a more mysterious sound even though you can still see things are ok, this shows that they are oblivious to the fact that something is going on and then a rock type of music comes on and tells us that things have become dangerous and violent. This is what you expect from a thriller trailer, however the sub-genre of the thriller is horror so it means that the thriller has to be more gruesome, thrillers are originally violent but with horror genre they are usually more out of the ordinary and gory. What you can expect from the film from the trailer will be lots of death.

In the trailer the scenes go from the group of friends to a different set of people at some kind of controls, in two different occasions you see the actions of people change, examples are when the athletic characters says they should stick together, the editing then went off the group for a while and then back to the friends again where you heard the characters opinion change and him then telling everyone to split up this would be a little suspicious when you hear someone's opinion change so quickly. What you can assume from this is that the characters are being manipulated without them having a single idea about it, this gives the mystery of who is doing the manipulating which drifts us over to the thriller genre.

The text in the trailer tells us that they dont know what is going on as it tells us that they believe everything is alright but nothing really is. The way the colour of the background of the text changes from yellow being a more innocent colour basically quite a neutral colour to red a colour that relates to violence it could connote blood and rage, the thing that gives this away is the fact that it changes colour when everything starts to go wrong there.

The setting is the basic setting of a horror but it follows a kind of thriller like storyline looking at the trailer you could see, the setting involves a derelict like gas station where the guy is mysterious and intimidating and after that they go into the basic scenery of some woodland and an old house with a strange interior, for example the window that the intelligent character looked through which the innocent character believed to just be a mirror in the other room. This shows that there are some secrets to the cabin which you would find strange.

Subverting the thriller genre

For our film trailer for this portion of media studies we are going to use the thriller genre, we are going to change this to make our own original idea of the genre, to do this we will have to look at what makes a thriller genre and put our own unique perspective into it. Doing this we make our own idea of the genre making it more original, we will combine the thriller genre with a sub-genre to re-invent it and produce a better trailer. Me and my group are planning to create a teaser trailer to illude the audience on what is going on.
The idea of this trailer is to focus more on the antagonist rather than the protagonist this shows a bit more individuality as you do not see many film trailers that focus on the villain because the hero is usually the subject of the trailer, by mixing this around we put a whole new perspective on the trailer. The film will be a phsycological thriller, this is the originality of the film because you don't usually see these things together.
